Mobomo webinars-now on demand! | learn more.

Hey RailsConf goers! You won't want to miss Jerry Cheung, co-author of (the just-released) MacRuby in Action book and Senior Engineer at Intridea present "Evented Ruby vs Node.js" Tuesday afternoon!

While Node.js is the hot new kid on the block, evented libraries like EventMachine for Ruby and Twisted for Python have existed for a long time. When does it make sense to use one over the other? What are the advantages and disadvantages to using node over ruby? In this talk, you will learn how to get the same power of concurrency enjoyed by Node.js while continuing to write in the language you know and love. Topics covered will include pubsub with redis or faye, building evented rack applications, and running evented applications alongside existing Rails apps.

Jerry will be in Salon K at 2:30 pm tomorrow.

Keep it weird, Austin Rails!

Mobomo's President, Ken Fang will speak at the 2012 Government Web and New Media Conference on May 16th, 2012. Nearly half of American adults are smartphone owners, and, by 2014, more people will go online using a phone than a computer. But they will still use computers—and tablets, and TVs, and gaming devices. How do we make content work across all these screens? Some are turning to "responsive design" to build content that automatically adapts to the device and size of the browser to provide a good experience to the end user. Learn about  the pros and cons of responsive design and walk through a case study of lessons learned in developing a responsive design for apps.usa.gov and apps.gobiernousa.gov.

In 2014, mobile internet usage will overtake desktop internet usage, and over half of mobile phone users use it to search for information. Thus it is important that federal agencies provide access to information in a mobile friendly interface. The National Library of Medicine is spearheading these efforts and have a large number of their sites created in a mobile friendly format. Mobomo helped to create the mobile version of the Drug Information Portal. Visit it here - http://bit.ly/nlm_druginfo

MacRuby In Action, a new book that teaches Ruby developers how to code OS X applications in Ruby, was released this week through Manning Publications. Jerry Cheung, a senior engineer at Intridea authored the book alongside Brendan Lim and Jeremy McAnally.

In the book you'll explore key Cocoa design patterns, along with a few twists that MacRuby makes possible. You'll also pick up high-value techniques including system scripting, automated testing practices, and getting your apps ready for the Mac App Store. It was written for Rubyists by Rubyists and no previous experience with Cocoa, Objective-C, or Mac OS X is required!

I asked Jerry what inspired him to work on this book:

MacRuby in Action bridges that gap between two great development communities: Mac desktop development and Ruby. If you're a seasoned web developer using Ruby on the web then MIRA is a gentle intro to the Cocoa runtime and Apple's development tools. If you're a veteran Mac developer, then MIRA shows you the dynamic and fun nature of Ruby. Macruby gives you the full power of the Cocoa framework to help you build native desktop apps that are indistinguishable from their Objective-C counterparts.

The Ruby community prides itself on test driven development, and the same practices can be applied to MacRuby. The book also cover gotchas and other tips to watch out for when bridging between these two technologies. The examples showcase commonly used components and help you get your feet wet in practical development while showing key development concepts.

You can get your eBook copy of MacRuby in Action today or preorder your pBook version now through Manning! After you've had a chance to digest some of the content, we'd love to hear your thoughts on the book. Leave your comments below or let us know on Twitter!
