RPA, or Robotic Process Automation, is the best solution for increasing efficiency and productivity in a cost-effective manner. This can include processing lots of paper forms, mundane tasks, or any other process by which a secure and streamlined automation can cut down on work hours.

RPA refers to the practice of automating routine, repetitive business practices with robotic software assistants who perform these tasks for you. You can automate processes that you spend too much time working on, such as transaction processing, managing your IT systems, and providing virtual customer support on your website.

Mobomo can help you incorporate RPA into your daily operations and within your website. We sat down with Mobomo’s Director of Commercial Business Fred Bigden to discuss the basics of RPA and how it can help your business increase efficiency, productivity, and profits.

Q: Could you explain what RPA is? Why is it so important for businesses?

A: RPA is a cognitive solution with image processing skills that automates a wide range of business processes that exist today among all organizations. It also learns through supervised observation by people at work, increasing your digital footprint.

RPA is important today because currently we spend a large amount of time and money by continuing to rely on knowledge of workers to extract the relevant information to feed into otherwise automated processes. Data is power, each day our organizations are inundated with ever-increasing amounts of it.

RPA solutions allow us to scale and process this unstopping flow of data 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with each passing day making the application smarter and smarter. By implementing the brain of the solution into a secure cloud environment, such as [Amazon Web Services], the entire organization can tap into the learning, processing, and benefits of each application before it.

Q: So why did Mobomo get involved with RPA? What benefits does it bring to Mobomo’s client base?

A: Our clients, like most, are looking for ways to be more efficient each day with all their resources. This simply comes down to ROI. Can I do more with what I already have or the same with less?

Our clients asked if we could do both, more with less, and can we do it at scale, securely, and most important of all reliably. Can we, from a company's resource perspective, use less human capital, use less money, and remove the current constraints to manual processing we see today? We can!

[With RPA], we are able to restructure the organizations human resources by removing the manual work and allocate them to verification and training exceptions in processing. [With RPA, Mobomo can] decrease the cycle time needed from processing large amounts of data, save cost in storage, save cost in headcount, and reliably meet thresholds for accuracy/automation.

Q: RPA sounds like a great solution for paper-based businesses to increase their efficiencies. What are the biggest challenges current RPA products in the market have, if any?

A: The biggest challenges today with RPA products is that the number of tasks to automate make it difficult to build a plug and play model. Each organization is like fabric, where we cannot disrupt or rip that fabric, but we must weave ourselves into their business today. This means customization at varying levels, and because of this challenge a large number of RPA products will focus on a single aspect of RPA that handles automation that is just the tip of the iceberg.

We also have a huge challenge with handwriting in that organizations today have many forms in which they receive that data. Most vendors will limit the data their solutions can process so that they can ensure the most accurate extraction they can.

Differentiation is another challenge. With the number of companies developing RPA solutions, we must all find what it is that makes us better than our competitors. You will see competitive pricing structures, niche processing features, white glove service, or transfer of intellectual property.

On the surface a good number of options available to organizations are hard to evaluate, and with cost saving measures, vendor assessments are happening less and less. So how does one stand out above the others? That is a significant challenge with many approaches.

Q: How do you know if your business needs an RPA solution? How can you tell if RPA would be a good investment?

A: The first step is to understand your level of maturity when it comes to an RPA solution. Where, as an organization, do you stand in readiness for something like this? Each company may have a different answer.

Can you support a cloud solution, or must you have an on premise application? Do you have manual and repetitive processes? Are their penalties for processing/data linking issues? Can you look at a workflow and potentially ask if you can do more with what you have or the same with less?

These are just some of the questions you must ask, and fortunately Mobomo can help an organization define its current place on the maturity scale, steps to get to the next level, and how we can help you get there.

Just as we feel our solutions can help organizations do more with less resources, in order to be successful, we need to again weave ourselves into your organization and define measurable milestones that would define what is success for you, and not just what has been successful for others.

This is not a one-size-fits-all area of technology, and you should not apply it to your organization that way. As said above, we define success using measurable standards, so is your organization in need of RPA?

First ask can you currently measure, reliably, your business processes in a way that are specific to that process as well as how it aligns to the overall goals of the company. If we can do all of that we are well on our way to being ready.

Key Takeaways: Why Your Business Needs RPA on Your Side

RPA can provide numerous solutions to your business, if you know how to implement the process into your operations. If you want to automate your routine tasks to help you use that manpower elsewhere, RPA would work perfectly in your business. But you have to think about your business model first

Let’s break down a few of the key considerations that Fred Bigden said you should ask yourself before you decide if RPA is right for your company.

  1. Can you support a cloud solution, or do you need an on-premise application? RPA works best when you can use the cloud to store data for ease within your business operations. If you rely on on-premises technology, Mobomo can help you determine if you can make the switch to a cloud-based solution and assist you in transitioning your data.

  1. Do you have any manual or repetitive products in your business operations? If you do not have any processes that RPA can take over for you, RPA would not be a necessary investment. By identifying the areas where you could use automation, Mobomo can help you develop strategies to incorporate RPA and make your operations more efficient.

  1. Will you face any penalties for processing or data-linking issues? Certain industries handle much more sensitive data than others, such as ecommerce solutions, government and financial institutions. However, Mobomo has the experience necessary to help you balance potential liabilities with RPA solutions so you can stay above any penalties. We have worked with several high-profile and data-sensitive organizations such as NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the FDIC.

  1. Can you look at a workflow and potentially ask if you can do more with what you have or the same with less? When you’re operating a business, your ROI matters in many ways – if you pay too much to have one task completed, you lose money in your overall operations. By choosing RPA to automate those mundane processes, you can cut down on your costs of manpower, paper materials, work hours, and more. You save money, complete tasks at a faster rate, and bring in more profits in a shorter period of time.

Your business will have more data tomorrow than it does today – that’s just the way that business works in our digital age. Can you support this data with the system you have now? Or can you support this data with lower costs and a higher ROI?

RPA can help you determine what data is useful for your business operations and how you can maximize this data to your greatest potential. If you can see a future for RPA processes in your business model, you can begin the incorporation process.

We understand that implementing RPA in your company is easier said than done. How can you properly evaluate your company to see where these processes can fit? Luckily, Mobomo has you covered.

Our company has the skills and tools necessary to help you answer Fred Bigden’s four questions to see if RPA is right for you. We will evaluate your business operations and identify areas where you can increase efficiency, productivity, and profit. Mobomo can help determine your maturity level for RPA and help you get there – providing all the information and support you need to succeed.

If you are ready to invest in streamlining your company’s mundane, manual processes and increase your ROI, contact us today and learn more about our RPA solutions and how we can help you reach maturity.

The Acquia Partner Awards recognizes the success and contributions of the partners throughout the course of the year working with the Acquia Platform. The Growth Partner of the Year award specifically recognizes growth from the previous year, while Partner of the Year honors the overall business performance.

When asked about the recent award recognition, Mobomo CEO Brian Lacey offered a few thoughts, “We are humbled by Acquia’s recent recognition. This company has been a reliable, trustworthy partner of ours. Between our solution expertise and their cutting-edge cloud services, we are glad that our partnership is not only financially successful, but that we can work together to create innovative solutions for federal organizations like NOAA Fisheries, which increase user engagement on their sites and streamline their information systems.”

The project was awarded based on Mobomo’s collaboration with Acquia and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries to revamp NOAA’s website. Acquia holds an Authority to Operate (ATO) certificate, which FedRAMP only grants to cloud providers that meet strict conditions.

Lacey also added, “We are honored by the awards, but more so by our partnership in general. We are excited to continue this fruitful relationship, collaborate on future projects, and help other companies and organizations optimize their online presence with advanced solutions and efficient cloud services.”

Mobomo is honored to announce that the USO's mobile application has won a Silver Davey Award!

“David defeated the giant Goliath with a big idea and a little rock – the sort of thing small agencies do each year. The annual International Davey Awards honors the achievements of the “Creative Davids” who derive their strength from big ideas, rather than stratospheric budgets.”

Mobomo was able to recognize the USO and the mobile application that we partnered with them to create.  This application fosters greater discoverability of locations where USO provides services and programs offered by the USO through its distributed locations and online.  Prior to discovery, USO was seeking to design, develop, and deploy a cross-platform mobile application that introduced an additional channel for United States military service members and their families to better engage with USO centers and programs.  Currently, there are 200+ USO locations that all create their own content. We were able to pull the CMS data and integrate it into the app so that the service member receives the content from the service center that they are physically at or that is most adjacent to them.

This mobile application launched in the spring of 2017 as part of a series of deployments on a fixed schedule starting with a limited beta release to 15 USO centers.

About the USO

The United Service Organizations or better known as the USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation. USO, a private, nonprofit organization, serves the men and women in the U.S. military and their families throughout their service – from the moment they join, through their deployments and as they transition back to their communities. Over time, the USO has become the vital bridge between Americans and their military service members. The USO provides programs, entertainment and services at more than 180 USO locations and hundreds of other military sites worldwide, including Afghanistan, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Italy, Japan, Guam, South Korea, Djibouti and the United States.

Award Program Showcases Outstanding Examples of Digital Experience Delivery

Vienna, VA – October 24, 2018 – Mobomo today announced it was selected along with NOAA Fisheries as the winner of the 2018 Acquia Engage Awards for the Leader of the Pack: Public Sector. The Acquia Engage Awards recognize the world-class digital experiences that organizations are building with the Acquia Platform.

In late 2016, NOAA Fisheries partnered with Mobomo to restructure and redesign their digital presence. Before the start of the project, NOAA Fisheries worked with Foresee to help gather insight on their current users. They wanted to address poor site navigation, one of the biggest complaints. They had concerns over their new site structure and wanted to test proposed designs and suggest improvements. Also, the NOAA Fisheries organization had siloed information, websites and even servers within multiple distinct offices. The Mobomo team was and (is currently) tasked with the project of consolidating information into one main site to help NOAA Fisheries communicate more effectively with all worldwide stakeholders, such as commercial and recreational fishermen, fishing councils, scientists and the public. Developing a mobile-friendly, responsive platform is of the utmost importance to the NOAA Fisheries organization. By utilizing Acquia, we are able to develop and integrate lots of pertinent information from separate internal systems with a beautifully designed interface.

“It has been a great pleasure for Mobomo to develop and deploy a beautiful and functional website to support NOAA fisheries managing this strategic resource. Whether supporting the work to help Alaskan Native American sustainable fish stocks, providing a Drupal-based UI to help fishing council oversight of the public discussion of legislation, or helping commercial fishermen obtain and manage their licenses, is honored help NOAA Fisheries execute its mission.” - Shawn MacFarland, CTO of Mobomo

More than 100 submissions were received from Acquia customers and partners, from which 15 were selected as winners. Nominations that demonstrated an advanced level functionality, integration, performance (results and key performance indicators), and overall user experience advanced to the finalist round, where an outside panel of experts selected the winning projects.

“This year’s Acquia Engage Award nominees show what’s possible when open technology and boundless ambition come together to create world-class customer experiences. They’re making every customer interaction more meaningful with powerful, personalized experiences that span the web, mobile devices, voice assistants, and more,” said Joe Wykes, senior vice president, global channels at Acquia. “We congratulate Mobomo and NOAA Fisheries and all of the finalists and winners. This year’s cohort of winners demonstrated unprecedented evidence of ROI and business value from our partners and our customers alike, and we’re proud to recognize your achievement.”

“Each winning project demonstrates digital transformation in action, and provides a look at how these brands and organizations are trying to solve the most critical challenges facing digital teams today,” said Matt Heinz, president of Heinz Marketing and one of three Acquia Engage Award jurors. Sheryl Kingstone of 451 Research and Sam Decker of Decker Marketing also served on the jury.

PHP 5.6 will officially be no longer supported through security fixes on December 31, 2018. This software has not been actively developed for a number of years, but people have been slow to jump on the bandwagon. Beginning in the new year, no bug fixes will be released for this version of PHP. This opens the door for a dramatic increase in security risks if you are not beginning the new year on a version of PHP 7. PHP 7 was released back in December 2015 and PHP 7.2 is the latest version that you can update to. PHP did skip over 6; so don't even try searching for it.

Drupal 8.6 is the final Drupal version that will support PHP 5.6. Many other CMS's will be dropping their support for PHP 5.6 in their latest versions as well. Simply because it is supported in that version does not mean that you will be safe from the security bugs; you will still need to upgrade your PHP version before December 31, 2018. In addition to the security risks, you have already been missing out on many improvements that have been made to PHP.

What Should You Do About This?

You are probably thinking "Upgrade, I get it." It may actually be more complicated than that and you will need to refactor. 90-95% of your code should be fine. The version your CMS is may affect the complexity of your conversion. Most major CMS's will handle PHP 7 right out of the box in their most recent versions.

By upgrading to a version of PHP 7, you will see a variety of performance improvements; the most dramatic being speed. The engine behind PHP, Zend Technologies, ran performance tests on a variety of PHP applications to compare the performance of PHP 7 vs PHP 5.6. These tests compared requests per second across the two versions. This relates to the speed at which code is executed, and how fast queries to the database and server are returned. These tests showed that PHP 7 runs twice as fast and you will see additional improvements in memory consumption.

How Can Mobomo Help?

Mobomo's team is highly experienced, not only in assisting with your conversion, but with the review of your code to ensure your environment is PHP 7 ready.  Our team of experts will review your code and uncover the exact amount of code that needs to be converted. There are a good number of factors that could come into play and affect your timeline. The more customizations and smaller plugins that your site contains, the more complex your code review and your eventual conversion could be. Overall, depending on the complexity of the code, your timeline could vary but this would take a maximum of 3 weeks.

Important Things to Know:

  1. How many contributed modules does your site contain?
  2. How many custom modules does your site contain?
  3. What does your environment look like?

Hyattsville Zombie Run

Mobomo was thrilled to sponsor the third annual Hyattsville Zombie Run 5K on October 13th! The event is hosted by the Hyattsville Elementary School PTA and proceeds support HES, including the purchase of art supplies, musical instruments, coats for students, field trips, teacher professional development, and more.

This Zombie themed 5K race is USATF certified and timed, and the 1 Mile Kids’ Challenge and 1K Family Fun Run are opportunities for everyone to participate. People dressed up as a zombie or any Halloween costume that added to the fun! All races started and finished at Magruder Park.
